For the five last years, average food expenditures of Russian households increased by 2-2,5 times. Growing middle class have higher requirements to food quality and can afford higher prices.

Dairy market: One of the largest company in the food industry and the absolute dairy market leader (34% market share in 2005) is Wimm-Bill-Dann which has 33 production facilities in Russia and CIS. Affiliated trading companies operate in the 26 largest cities of Russia and the CIS, with distributors working in more than 40 cities. The company has over 18,000 employees. Wimm-Bill-Dann has a brand portfolio of more than 1,000 types of dairy products and 150 types of juice and juice-based drinks.

Baltika Brewery is another market leader, beating Wimm-Bill-Dann by market capitalization. In the list of Europe's 500 largest enterprises published by Financial Times Baltica is on the 373th position. Presently, Baltica Brand is Europe's second largest in terms of sales and accounts for more than 70% of all Russian beer exports. The company is owned by Baltic Beverage Holdings (BBH), a joint venture of Carlsberg and Newcastle.

Meat market: The constantly increasing meat import is making domestic meat production even more unprofitable and drags the prices down. Only in the period from January 2006 to August 2006 meat import increased by 50%, causing a more than 20% fall in purchasing prices. Per August 2006 more than 43% of meat products sold in the Russian market are imported.

However, the industry has its leaders. Cherkizovo Group, est. in 2005, is a leading Russian vertically integrated agro-industrial company, with a full production cycle from feed production and breeding to meat processing and distribution. The operational facilities of the Group include 8 meat processing plants, 4 pig production complexes, 2 poultry production complexes as well as one combined fodder production plant. It also operates two trading houses with subsidiaries in major Russian cities.
