  mining

Russia has more than 20 000 active deposits of minerals, one third of which are now being exploited. Russia has over 10 % of world's oil resources, about 33% of gas resources, 11% of coal and 26% of iron ore.

One may say the Russian territory is a vivid illustration of the Periodic Table of Elements, which is called "Mendeleev's table" in Russia, by the name of the table's Russian creator.

Despite of lack of investments and declining production, Russia annually accounts for 9-10% of world oil production, about 25% of gas, 5-7% of coal and the same of iron ore, about 20% of nickel and cobalt etc.

Metallurgy

Metal industry accounts for ca 5% of Russia's GNP, about 17% of industrial production and about 14% of the total exports. By production of steel Russia is number 4 in the world, after China, Japan and US, by export of metals - number 3 after China and Japan. By aluminium exports Russia is on the 2nd position after the US, as well as by exports of titanium.

Iron ore

Iron ore sector is very much centralised. The three leading iron ore producers (GOKs) are Lebedinski, Mikhailovski and Stoilenski Mining Factory. They account for more than half of all iron ore output in Russia. Five leading producers account for 70%, twelve leading producers - for 96%. Other major producers are Kachkanarski GOK, Chusovskoi GOK, Karel Pellet, Kovdorski GOK, Korshunovski GOK, Olenegorski GOK, Vysokogorski GOK, KMARuda and Bogoslovskoe RU.

Factories focus mainly on production of iron ore concetrate (about 50% of total output) and pellets, but also produce agglomerated iron ore and HBI. Almost all factories are now a part of major holding companies such as Severstal Group, MetalInvest, Euraz Holding, Mechel, RUSAL, Norilski Nickel, UGMK and others.

Non-ferrous metallurgy
In the same way as above, almost all mining companies in the sector are parts of one or another major group in Russia. The same names can be found here, such as multi-profiled Norilski Nickel (market leader), followed by RUSAL (aluminium), UGMK (mainly copper) and SUAL (aluminium).
