      Power Industry
power   Russian Electric Power System is dominated by thermal power plants which account for 69% of the entire capacity. They altogether produce about 65% of the electric energy. Most of the thermal power plants use the combination technology to produce both electric power and heating. Hydro power stations account for 20% of the entire capacity, and almost the same in the entire electric energy production.

Nuclear power stations account for almost 10% of Russia’s energy production capacities and for 15% of the energy production (summer 2006). Russian govt is planning to increase their share in energy production by 2020 up to 19,5%.

Presently, Russia produces much less electricity than it needs. Consumption has been growing with an annual rate of 4-6%, while the capacities have not been upgraded.  Prior to 2005, electric energy consumption in Russia should have increased by 50 bn kWh, but in reality it increased by 73 bn kWh. Russian government claims the country’s loses about 5% of its GDP because of the insufficient energy supply of electric energy.

In order to fulfil the gap, Russia is presently reforming its electric energy system. You can read about the reform on this page on the website of United Energy Systems, fully state-owned organisation headed by former Russia’s finance minister Alexander Chubais.

Also President Putin said the reformation of the power system in Russia is one of the top priorities for the government calling the coming reforms the second grand electrification of the country referring to the famous GOELRO electrification project of the Soviet Russia initiated by Vladimir Lenin in the 1920s.

Did you know…
Russian govt plans to increase power production by more than 1,5 times within the next 10 years, provided that also foreign investors will take part in the projects.
