  timber

There are about 30 000 companies involved in wood-working industry, which are mainly involved in deliveries of round timber. Most of those are small companies operating on low capacity and without any forest preservation policy, which explains the average low-efficiency of the industry.

Presently, wood-working industry accounts for slightly more than % of Russia’s BNP. Round timber still makes the biggest part of Russia’s export of wood materials, which by 2005 increased by three times compared to 1990.

About 15000 companies are regularly exporting round timber abroad. The government urges the industry to invest in wood-working facilities, but restrictive customs duties on equipment and favourable are hindering the process.

One of the biggest problem of the industry is illegal felling which causes a damage equivalent to at least R5 bn every year (approximately NOK 1,2bn), as per end of 2005. Activities in the industry are regulated by the Forest Code  which however is still under consideration in the State Duma as per summer 2006.
